Con Dau Island: Escape to Paradise
Con Dau Island is known for its spectacular beaches and history, among other things, but most of all, for its pure natural beauty.
Con Dau Island is also particularly famous as a great diving spot for the sport enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned or a first-time diver, Con Dau offers many diving tours and lessons which tourists can truly enjoy. For those who love the sport, diving has a unique experience compared to other sports and activities as a whole in that you feel one with nature as you go keep going further and deeper into the ocean, marveling and taking in at the beauty and mystery of the coral reefs and marine life.
Con Dau is proud to have the most diverse range of dive sties and in fact the only diveable wreck in Vietnam. One dive which is equivalent to two ocean dives per person costs VND5,300,000 (US$250). It is inclusive of a 90-minute session or diving lesson in the pool before the actual dive commences.
Its entire marine area is rich in biodiversity with more than 1,300 species of sea creatures identified, so far that is. Its ecosystem is even proven to be a “favorable” habitat for one-of-a-kind species. But equally breathtaking to Con Dau’s underwater environment is its overland landscape, 80 percent of which is composed of dense forests and a 140 square kilometer marine-protected area.
Six Sense Con Dau Resort is one place in the island tourists should definitely experience. Nestled in Bai Dat Doc, the resort is a total epitome of luxury and elegance with its beachfront villas, private pool, plunge tub and al fresco rain shower bathrooms, private wine cellars and fully-loaded Bose sound system, among other things. It has several restaurants which serve authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Delicious Restaurant offers excellent cuts and cheeses, while Dining by the Sea Restaurant, which is considered to be the signature restaurant of the resort, boasts of international dishes like Wagyu beef and locally-sourced shellfish, just to name a few.
Resort guests can also enjoy several water sport activities like kayaking and sailing, and other outdoor activities like picnicking, hiking and camping. If you’re lucky enough, you may have the chance to see turtles come at night, make holes in the sand and lay their eggs. It’s one unique experience tourists will definitely hold forever in their memory.
Local museums, tiger cages, Hang Duong cemetery, Hon Bay Canh, and the “Love” Mountain are just of the other tourist destinations in the island. And for those who want a taste of the local delicacy, the Con Dau Market is another place tourists would enjoy especially with its specialty, mut hat bang (malabar almond). It is a walnut-like tasting nut that is being sold in jars along the waterfront at night and comes in salted and sweet flavors. Malabar almond trees fill up the promenades of Con Dau during its seasonal month in either July or August.
Mut hat bang is made by first collecting ripe Malabar almond fruits that have been eaten by birds and fell to the ground. The fruits are then dried for four to five days, peeled in order to remove the seeds, then fried with salt or sugar. Sweetened mut hat bang costs VND45,000 per 200 grams while the salted type is about VND55,000 per 200 grams, too. The small nuts cost much more because the process of preparing them is more tedious.
For tourists who get to experience the natural beauty and elegance of Con Dau, city life doesn’t seem that alluring anymore. That is why more and more visitors come back to the place to escape to paradise once more.
