Hoi An: Street Food Adventure
If you're in Hoi An, one activity visitors should include in their itinerary is trying out the street foods. Many, if not most, tourists may be scared of doing so because of the new and unfamiliar taste (and even look of the food), but it's one experience they will always remember, and even enjoy. The Phuc Kien Pagoda is one place in Vietnam where you can find many kinds of street food.
Tofu, grilled corn, and fried banana cake are just some of the dishes served by the vendors to entice both the foreign tourists and local residents. Albeit small and maybe even uncomfortable, chairs are provided for the customers to make their dining more pleasurable. But watching the vendors cook and looking around the area while waiting and even during a meal is already a delightful experience in themselves.Going further into the town reveals more street food vendors and even more street food choices. Saigon has its own street food, perhaps as well as in all places in the world, but the difference in Hoi An is that you can eat it in peace and even enjoy a leisurely walk along its quiet, historically romantic streets.
The Thu Bon River along the Cau (Japanese) Bridge is also one area in the country where delicious street food is sold. From the smell of the place itself, one is assured of a sumptuous treat ahead. Com Ga (chicken rice); Cao Lau (noodles served with prok and greens); Nem Nuong (grilled meat); Quang noodles; and Hen Xuc Banh Da (mussels served with dry pancake) are just some of the specialties in the area. Moreover, they are unbelievably cheap at only VND25,000.While munching on the street treat, tourists can breathe in the fresh air and watch junks and boats pass along the river.
After meals, they can even enjoy a boat ride while throwing garlands into the water. At VND100,000 for a thirty-minute trip, it's all worth it.Street food is generally affordable. But the overall experience of both eating unfamiliar food and seeing new places and faces is priceless, a memory to hold special for a lifetime.
