Sporting Vietnamese Flavors through Local Cocktail Mixes
Imported drinks fill the cocktail menu of most local Vietnamese bars. But not for long. Creative Ha Noi mixologists have thoughtfully brought back long-forgotten local ingredients into the cocktail mainstream and was able to come up with unique and marketable flavors. Though not many places have the local mixes in their list as of yet, a few venues decided to be the trend-setters in adding Vietnamese flavors in your glass:
The Rooftop Address: 19 flr. Pacific Place, 83B Ly Thuong Kiet, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi Its location offers patrons a clear view of the city's rapidly changing skyline. This modern and spacious bar is commended for drinks that are all top shelf and with bartenders and staff that always keep your glasses full. Their cocktail menu offers a truly wide range of choice including one of the best Da Lat wines. The Tiamo is one of 10 drinks on The Rooftop's new cocktail menu which is a spicy and sweet combination of Da Lat Cabernet 23-year aged rum, blueberry jam from Lam Dong Province and Yen Bai cinnamon. Its Rooftop Special won the Viet Nam division of the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition in the previous year.
Daluva Address: 33 To Ngoc Van Stret, Tay Ho District, Hanoi Daluva is a modern and comfy venue to chill out with great tapas food, beer, wine and cocktails. This little gastro-pub is known for utilizing local ingredients in their dishes rather than exporting. And so they did with their drinks. Try Daluva's Turkish Nau Da, a mix of Vietnamese coffee-infused rice wine and Turkish-inspired tea-smoked cardamom bitters. It might look very subtle with the thick layer of condensed milk, ice and a miniature spoon. But once you take your first sip, you'll realize it's far more than your average brew.
Son Tinh Lounge Bar Address: 31 Xuan Dieu, Tay Ho, Hanoi This stylish lounge bar, is known for its great music, relaxing atmosphere and a good wine list. As they serve plated dishes here, they always believe that there's a Sơn Tinh liquor for every occasion and for every plate. Their liquor menu, quite extensive, includes Sơn Tinh Rose Apple, Sơn Tinh Apricot, Sơn Tinh Passion Fruit, Sơn Tinh Red Plum, Sơn Tinh Minh Mạng, Sơn Tinh Mỹ Tửu, Sơn Tinh Bổ Sa Pa, Sơn Tinh Nhất Dạ, Sơn Tinh Vương Tửu, Sơn Tinh Bạch Sâm, Sơn Tinh Nếp Cẩm and Sơn Tinh Nếp Phú Lộc among others.
Now they have a whole new list of flavors, named of 12 new "essence of Viet Nam" cocktails, which they intend to market. Don’t be surprised with what they have come up. For starters, nuoc mam (fish sauce) is among the flavors they used, geniusly added to Bloody Mary in tomato juice, lime juice and a grind of Phu Quoc black pepper. As Vietnam is rich in tropical fruit production, Son Tinh carefully studied how to blend each kind of produce into their mixes. Son Tinh's Paradise Punch is made from ripe pineapples, contrary to other places which utilize canned juice. The Bitter Sweet Salute is a twist on the classic Negroni in which two varieties of Son Tinh's ruou - the only Vietnamese liquor to win awards overseas - replace the traditional gin and Campari. More on the new cocktail list will include the use of fresh mango and watermelon among others.
