Suoi Voi: Hidden Gem in Central Vietnam
Being the cultural heart of the country, Hue is a place not to miss when travelling to Central Vietnam. Adorned with breathtaking pagodas, citadels and interesting tombs, and most importantly, cradling the legendary Imperial City, a visit here would indeed be quite an experience. Some tourists, however, argue that beyond the mausoleums of the Vietnamese kings, there isn’t really much more to see and do in Hue.
To those who have been more acquainted to Hue, that is a different case. This place will never cease to fascinate you even after you have seen the many historic structures. Its delectable cuisine, beautiful scenery and the slow pace are among its innate gems that sure deserves appreciation.
However, it doesn’t end there. Just journey a little further in Loc Tien Commune of Phu Loc District and you will get to visit Suoi Voi (Elephant Spring). Just 60km from the centre of Hue, and 40km from Da Nang City, Suoi Voi is actually a network of pure springs, boulders, mountains and jungle which come together to create a truly stunning landscape.
Getting there is a pleasant ride since the road is concrete and well-paved. Parking is easy. In fact, you just drive as far as your vehicle can reach, then make your way through the high steps within the forest by foot.
Suoi Voi is a breathtaking view in itself. The freshness from its water coupled with the calm breeze around it is perfect for one to feel soothed and rejuvenated. You can find locally-built bamboo huts lined along the two sides of the stream which can be rented. If you forgot to take food with you, the locals sell you delicacies or offer to cook you food for a fee.
The story behind this spring is a wonder as well. Suoi Voi was once called Suoi Me (Me Spring – me meaning large elephant in the ancient language). It was named such because of the many large elephants that used to come to the stream during warm weathers. For some reason, the elephants, after some time, never came back. They did, however, leave their marks in the shape of large holes surrounding the spring, which over time filled with water and turned into small pools.
A big rock shaped like an elephant with a long trunk is noticeable along its landscape. The rock is however man-made and marks the nearby Elephant Lagoon, which is perhaps the most beautiful pool as it lies between two waterfalls and is completely translucent.
If you further inside the forest, rare animals and plants will unfold before you. For anyone who is leaned into photography, he will be spoilt for beautiful scenery to capture.
Suoi Voi was first opened as a tourist destination in 1994. Residents in the area make a living from offering services, selling food and renting out huts to visitors. People are friendly, the place is relaxing and the experience is truly different. Truly a wonderful way to bring diversity to your Hue visit.
