The H'mông is the fifth most populous minority in Vietnam with more than one million people. The history of this people can be traced back over more than 4,000 years. For about 2,000 years, there have been written records in Chinese chronicles and history books. According to legend, the ancestors of H'Mông "From an icy country with severe winters and long nights" Probably from the high ridges of Tibet, Siberia and Mongolia. There are some indications that they are the descendants of a tribe named San Miao, already mentioned in Chinese writings from the early epoch of the legendary emperors (2852 to 2255 BC). It is clear from these writings that they opposed the Chinese empire, partly because they wanted their own writings, which the Chinese, however, did not confess to them. Their rebellion led to an intensification of oppression by the Chinese, and to the fact that over the centuries they were being expelled more and more into the inhospitable southern mountainous regions. As a result of a failed insurrection against the Chinese in the middle of the 19th century, they emigrated across the border to Vietnam and Laos. From there, they have also expanded to Thailand and Myanmar over the last 100 years. The H'Mông are now one of the most widely dispersed minorities. About five million people live in southern China, where they are allocated to the minority of Miao, which comprises around 10 million people. H'Mông is located in Laos (about 500,000), Thailand (about 150,000) and in Myanmar (exact number unknown), but also as a result of the Vietnam war in the USA (about 200,000-300,000) and in Europe (approx. 20,000). Like other mountaineers, the H'Mông are divided into several subgroups according to their clothing. One differentiates between White (H'mông Trắng), Black (H'mông Ðen), Red (Hmông Đỏ), Green (H'Mông Xanh) and Flowers H'Mông (H'Mông Hoa). They are at home all over the country.
